The grand AI roadmap is easy to sell and hard to survive. Here's the case for starting with one measurable win — and letting it earn the strategy.
Every week we talk to a business leader who has just been told they need an "AI strategy." Usually by someone selling one.
Here is the quieter truth: you probably don't need a strategy yet. You need one good first win.
A grand, 18-month AI roadmap is easy to sell and hard to survive. It looks impressive in a boardroom and burns real budget on slideware while the business waits for something to actually change. By the time the strategy is "ready," the market has moved, the sponsor has moved, and the enthusiasm has quietly drained out of the room.
Meanwhile, the teams that pull ahead tend to do something far less glamorous. They pick one painful, expensive, repetitive process and let AI take it off their plate. They prove the value in a number the business already tracks. Then — and only then — they earn the right to the next one.
What a first win looks like
A good first win is small enough to ship this quarter and real enough that someone would notice if it stopped. It usually has three features:
- It's tied to a number someone already owns — hours, cost, error rate, cycle time. - It lives inside the systems you already run , not in a shiny tool off to the side. - It's low-drama if it's wrong — the kind of work where a mistake is easy to spot and easy to catch.
Find the process everyone quietly dreads. That's almost always where to start.
How we think about it
At Enterprise Intelligence Group, we're not a technology provider. We're business people who understand your world — and we start with your commercial objectives and work backward to the right AI, not the other way around. We stay platform-agnostic, integrating into what you already have rather than asking you to rebuild around us. And we treat going live as the beginning, not the finish line: benefit realization is the point.
Strategy still matters. But it's not the thing you buy first. It's the thing you can afford — and actually believe in — once your first win has paid for it.
If you're exploring where AI fits and the "strategy" conversations feel abstract, start concrete instead. Pick the one process your team dreads most, and let's see whether it's a good first win.
