Merchandising & Assortment

Understand where demand will move before you change the range

A new product can sell well without creating the same amount of additional category demand. A delisted item can move demand elsewhere, or leave a need the remaining range does not meet. An attractive assortment can still fail if the space, supply or store execution does not support it.

Enterprise Intelligence Group helps category, merchandising and CPG customer teams evaluate these decisions. We connect product performance with category strategy, shopper understanding, store differences and the practical work needed to deliver the range.

Decisions we help you make

New product introductions: assess the product's intended role, relevant comparisons, likely demand sources and launch requirements.

Private label: examine positioning, branded and private-label alternatives, category contribution and the evidence behind the proposed opportunity.

Cannibalization and demand transfer: distinguish plausible substitution from additional demand, and identify what evidence would support the decision.

Assortment optimization: compare additions, removals and range changes against the needs of the category and each location group.

Assortment and space: connect product choices with shelf capacity, facings, category footprint, adjacent products and execution constraints.

Start with an Assortment & Demand Transfer Review

Bring one category, proposed launch, private-label opportunity or range change. We establish the business question, location scope and alternatives before examining detailed data.

The review combines analytical evidence with the judgment behind the merchandising decision. What need is this product intended to serve? Which products might shoppers substitute? Is the perceived premium or value position supported by evidence? What happens to the rest of the range when space changes?

What you receive

What the work draws on

Relevant inputs may include item and location performance, distribution and assortment history, availability, price and promotion records, product attributes, shelf information and previous category decisions. We also work with the people who understand supplier commitments, shopper perceptions and the practical limitations of the stores.

When evidence is incomplete, we make the assumption visible and define a test. A demand-transfer scenario is not presented as an observed result.

AI that supports merchandising judgment

AI can organize product information, identify gaps, propose attributes for review and help monitor an agreed range decision. A suggestion such as "premium everyday alternative" needs a source, a named reviewer and validation. It should not quietly become a fact in the product master.

EIG connects this work with forecasting and replenishment, technology requirements and implementation. New software is one possible response, not the starting assumption.

PRACTICAL QUESTIONS

Must all data be complete?

No. We agree what can be assessed, what remains uncertain and which additional evidence would materially change the decision.

Can the review support a retailer and a CPG category team?

Yes. We establish the decision-maker, permitted data, commercial perspective and responsibilities at the outset.
